Donald Trump has promised to carry out mass deportations as soon as he is in office – and immigration detention will be a critical part of his draconian agenda. Immigrant detention is known for abuse, pervasive medical neglect, and complete disregard for the dignity of people in its custody. In fact, of the deaths in detention the ACLU and our partners examined from 2017-2021, 95 percent were preventable or possibly preventable if appropriate medical care had been provided.

These abusive conditions come at an immense cost to taxpayers, while lining the pockets of private prison corporations that run immigrant detention facilities plagued by poor conditions, understaffing, and safety issues. Earlier this year, ICE signaled plans to expand detention beyond its already staggering capacity of 190 facilities nationwide, despite strong public opposition from immigrants' rights advocates and members of Congress. These efforts only help to facilitate President-Elect Trump's ability to carry out his mass detention and deportation program.
